Music in Catholic Worship -- New Statement
The Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy has recently published a new statement
on the role of music in liturgical celebrations. It is a further development
of the November 1967 instruction.
"A few years have elapsed, and the pastoral situation in the United States
can be regarded with greater calm and serenity. However, it is urgent that
fresh guidelines be given to foster interest with regard to music in the
liturgy" (Introduction). Revised by the committee on music of the Federation
of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions and adopted by the Bishops' Committee on
the Liturgy, it is presented as background and guidelines for the proper role
of music within the liturgy. It will be useful to the bishops, their liturgical
commissions, and all who celebreate or plan liturgies.
The contents consist of:
(1) The Theology of Celebration
(2) Pastoral Planning for Celebration
(3) The Place of Music in the Celebration
(4) General Consideration on Liturgical Structure
(5) Application of the Principles of Celebration to Music in Eucharistic Worship
(6) Music in Sacramental Celebrations
The new statement ($.40 per copy) can be ordered from the Publications Office,
United States Catholic Conference, 1312 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington,
D.C. 20005.
